Uganda can be visited year-round — the country straddles the equator and has no extreme seasons — but the best time to visit Uganda for a safari depends heavily on what you are planning to do, which parks you want to visit, and what kind of roads and conditions you are prepared to handle in your hire vehicle. This guide breaks down Uganda’s seasons month by month, explains how each affects gorilla trekking, game drives, road conditions, and vehicle requirements, and helps you plan the perfect Uganda safari timing for your trip.
Best Time to Visit Uganda for a Safari: Uganda’s Two Dry Seasons — The Best Safari Times
Uganda has two dry seasons each year — the long dry season from June to September and the short dry season from December to February. These are generally the best times to visit Uganda for a safari for most travellers.
June to September — Peak Safari Season
June to September is Uganda’s main tourist season and the most popular time for gorilla trekking at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park game drives.
Why this season is best:
- Trails in Bwindi and Kibale are at their driest and most manageable
- Park roads across all national parks are in their best condition
- Wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources making game drives more productive
- Gorilla trekking permits are most reliably available — though must be booked months ahead
- A RAV4 or Prado handles most park circuits comfortably in dry season
Downsides: Peak season means higher accommodation prices and gorilla permits sell out further in advance. Book everything 3 to 6 months ahead for June to September visits.
December to February — Short Dry Season
December to February offers similarly good conditions to the main dry season with slightly lower visitor numbers and more available gorilla permits. Christmas and New Year see a spike in visitors and prices — January and February are the sweet spot of this window for value.
Road conditions: Park roads are dry and firm. All self-drive routes including Bwindi, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley are at their most accessible. A Land Cruiser Prado handles virtually every route in this season.
Best Time to Visit Uganda for a Safari: Uganda’s Two Rainy Seasons
March to May — Long Rains
March to May is Uganda’s longer rainy season — the period of heaviest rainfall across most of the country. This is the low season for Uganda safaris.
What changes in the long rains:
- Bwindi approach roads — particularly Nkuringo and Rushaga — become extremely challenging. A Land Cruiser V8 is essential
- Kidepo Valley approach roads can become impassable even for a V8 — check conditions before booking
- Game viewing can be harder in the lush green vegetation
- Gorilla trekking is still possible and permits are easier to obtain
- Accommodation prices are significantly lower
Self-drive advice for the long rains: Always hire a genuine high-clearance 4×4. The Land Cruiser Prado is minimum — the V8 is preferred for routes including Bwindi southern sectors and any remote parks. Carry a recovery kit and tow rope — standard on all Uganda Car Rentals vehicles.
October to November — Short Rains
October to November is the shorter of Uganda’s two rainy seasons — typically less intense than March to May. Many experienced Uganda travellers consider this an excellent time to visit — the landscape is lush and green, wildlife is active, bird life is at its peak with migratory species present, and visitor numbers are lower.
Road conditions: Main tarmac routes are unaffected. Park interior tracks are wet but manageable in a Land Cruiser Prado on most circuits. Bwindi approach roads require a Prado minimum — V8 recommended for southern sectors.
