About Kidepo Valley National Park
Kidepo Valley National Park covers 1,442 square kilometres of the Karamoja plateau in northeastern Uganda, sitting at an altitude of 914 to 2,750 metres. Established in 1962, the park is consistently rated by Africa Geographic and CNN Travel as one of the top national parks in Africa. Its isolation — 700 kilometres from Kampala with no major town nearby — means visitor numbers remain extremely low, giving travellers a genuinely exclusive wildlife experience with the park almost entirely to themselves.
Wildlife at Kidepo Valley
Kidepo’s wildlife list is exceptional and includes several species found nowhere else in Uganda. Lion populations are among the healthiest in East Africa. Cheetah — absent from all other Uganda parks — are regularly sighted on the open Narus Valley plains. Bat-eared fox, caracal, striped hyena, and African wild dog are all present. Elephant, buffalo, zebra, Rothschild giraffe, and eland are all abundant.
The Narus Valley
The Narus Valley in the south of the park is the wildlife heartland of Kidepo — a broad, open floodplain with permanent water that concentrates game throughout the dry season. Early morning game drives on the Narus Valley tracks offer some of the finest wildlife viewing in Uganda, with frequent lion, elephant, and cheetah sightings on circuits with very few other vehicles.

Driving Time from Entebbe to Kidepo
From Entebbe Airport to Kidepo Valley National Park is approximately 9 to 10 hours via Kampala, Lira, and Gulu on tarmac, then 2 to 3 hours of murram road through Kotido or Moroto to the park gate. Total drive time from Kampala to Apoka is 9 to 11 hours. Most travellers split the drive over two days — overnighting in Gulu or Kitgum.
Best Vehicle for Kidepo Valley
The Toyota Land Cruiser V8 is the only recommended vehicle for Kidepo Valley National Park. The final approach roads from Kotido and Moroto involve long sections of corrugated murram, river crossings, and steep rocky tracks that demand maximum ground clearance and off-road capability. Game Drives
Morning and evening game drives on the Narus Valley circuits are the core activity at Kidepo. The low visitor numbers mean you frequently have sightings entirely to yourself — a stark contrast to more crowded East African parks. Lion, cheetah, elephant, and giraffe are regularly encountered on standard 3-hour circuits.
