About Lake Mburo National Park
Overview
Lake Mburo National Park covers 370 square kilometres of Ankole savannah in western Uganda — the smallest of Uganda’s savannah parks but one of its most wildlife-rich relative to its size. The park centres on five lakes connected by a system of wetlands and open grassland, and is the only park in Uganda where impala and zebra can be seen — species absent from all of Uganda’s other parks.
Wildlife at Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo’s wildlife list is impressive for its size — including zebra, impala, topi, eland, bushbuck, waterbuck, oribi, buffalo, hippopotamus, crocodile, leopard, hyena, and over 350 bird species. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and are occasionally sighted on game drives. The park is also one of Uganda’s best destinations for the rare African finfoot and papyrus gonolek along the lake shores.
Self-Drive Lake Mburo — Routes and Game Drives
Is Lake Mburo Suitable for Self-Drive?
Lake Mburo is one of Uganda’s most self-drive-friendly parks. The game drive tracks are well-maintained and clearly signposted, the park is compact enough to navigate without guides, and the approach road from the Masaka highway is tarmac to the park gate. A Toyota RAV4 or Land Cruiser Prado handles the park comfortably in dry season.
Main Game Drive Circuit
The main game drive circuit loops through the open Rwonyo and Warukiri grasslands — the best areas for zebra, impala, topi, and buffalo herds. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the full circuit. Morning drives before 9am and evening drives from 4pm offer the best wildlife activity.
Kazuma Loop — Best for Leopard and Hyena
The Kazuma loop on the western side of the park is the most productive area for leopard and spotted hyena sightings — particularly in the early morning before the heat of the day. Less visited than the main Rwonyo circuit, Kazuma gives a more remote and exclusive game drive experience.
Boat Cruise on Lake Mburo
What to Expect
The Lake Mburo boat cruise is one of the park’s highlight activities — a 2-hour cruise on the lake passing hippo pods, Nile crocodiles, water monitor lizards, and a spectacular diversity of waterbirds. Boats depart from the Rwonyo jetty twice daily — at 9am and 2pm. Booking is done at the UWA office at Rwonyo camp on arrival. Cost approximately $30 USD per person.
Birding on the Boat Cruise
Lake Mburo is a world-class birding destination and the boat cruise is the richest birding activity in the park. Over 350 species have been recorded — including the African finfoot, papyrus gonolek, white-backed duck, African jacana, and numerous kingfisher species along the lake shoreline.
Walking Safaris at Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo is one of the few Uganda national parks where guided walking safaris are regularly offered — and it is excellent. Walking through the open grassland with an armed UWA ranger brings you eye-level with zebra herds, impala, and buffalo on foot — a perspective no vehicle game drive can replicate. Walking safaris depart from Rwonyo camp and last 2 to 3 hours. Cost approximately $30 USD per person plus ranger fee.
Driving to Lake Mburo National Park
From Entebbe Airport to Lake Mburo
From Entebbe Airport to Lake Mburo is approximately 240km — about 3 hours on the Masaka Road via Kampala. Turn south at Lyantonde onto the tarmac road to the Nshara park gate. The entire route is tarmac and manageable in a RAV4, Prado, or Land Cruiser V8.
Best Vehicle for Lake Mburo
The Toyota RAV4 is the most cost-effective vehicle for Lake Mburo — the park tracks are manageable in dry season and the approach road is tarmac throughout. For visits during the October to November or March to May rainy seasons, the Land Cruiser Prado is recommended. Browse our full 4×4 fleet.
Lake Mburo as a Stopover
Lake Mburo is perfectly positioned as an overnight stopover on the drive between Kampala and western Uganda parks. Many travellers stop for a night game drive and boat cruise at Lake Mburo on the way to Queen Elizabeth National Park or Bwindi — breaking up the longer western drive and adding a bonus wildlife experience to the itinerary.
Where to Stay at Lake Mburo — Camping
Rwonyo Public Campsite
The Rwonyo public campsite on the lakeshore is the best base for self-drive Lake Mburo visitors. Facilities include ablution blocks, a campfire area, and direct access to the boat cruise jetty and main game drive tracks. A rooftop tent 4×4 rental at Rwonyo campsite is an exceptional experience — hippos come ashore at night and can be heard grazing around the campsite perimeter.
