Day-by-Day 14-Day Uganda Road Trip Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive Entebbe, Collect Vehicle
Arrive at Entebbe Airport and collect your Land Cruiser V8 with a full vehicle briefing from Uganda Car Rentals. Overnight in Entebbe or drive 45 minutes to Kampala. Optional evening visit to Entebbe Botanical Gardens — one of Africa’s oldest botanical gardens on the shores of Lake Victoria, excellent for birding and vervet monkeys.
Day 2 — Entebbe to Murchison Falls — 5 Hours
Early departure north from Entebbe via Kampala Northern Bypass and Masindi. Optional stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided white rhino tracking walk — the only place in Uganda to see white rhino in the wild. Continue to Murchison Falls National Park. Arrive by afternoon for a sunset drive on the northern bank. Overnight at Paraa campsite or lodge.
Day 3 — Full Day Murchison Falls
Morning game drive on the northern bank Buligi circuit — best area for lion, elephant, giraffe, and Uganda kob. Afternoon Nile boat cruise from Paraa jetty to the base of the falls — 3 hours passing hippos, crocodiles, and elephants on the riverbank, finishing at the thundering base of Murchison Falls. Overnight Paraa.
Day 4 — Murchison Falls to Gulu — 3 Hours
Drive northeast from Murchison Falls via Karuma Bridge to Gulu — Uganda’s second largest city and the gateway to northern Uganda. Gulu is a convenient overnight stop for travellers heading to Kidepo. Good hotels and restaurants available. Stock up on fuel and supplies for the onward drive to Kidepo the following day. Overnight Gulu.
Day 5 — Gulu to Kidepo Valley — 4 to 5 Hours
The longest and most demanding drive of the 14-day itinerary — northeast from Gulu via Kitgum to Kidepo Valley National Park. The final 80km from Kotido to Apoka is murram road requiring the Land Cruiser V8. Arrive at Apoka in time for an afternoon game drive on the Narus Valley — your first encounter with Kidepo’s extraordinary wildlife. Overnight Apoka campsite or Apoka Safari Lodge.
Day 6 — Full Day Kidepo Valley
Full day exploring the Narus Valley game drive circuits. Morning drive at 6:30am for the best predator activity — cheetah, lion, and African wild dog are all regularly sighted here. Afternoon: optional guided nature walk with UWA rangers, or visit the Karamojong cultural village adjacent to the park. Sunset drive on the open plains. Overnight Apoka.
Day 7 — Kidepo to Kibale Forest — 8 Hours
The longest driving day of the itinerary — return west via Gulu and Fort Portal to Kibale Forest National Park. Break the drive with a fuel and lunch stop in Gulu. The approach to Fort Portal through the Rwenzori foothills is spectacular — tea estates, crater lakes, and mountain views. Arrive at Kibale by early evening. Overnight near Kibale Forest.
Day 8 — Chimpanzee Trekking at Kibale Forest
Full morning chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest — permits cost $250 USD per person, book in advance through UWA. The Kibale chimpanzee families are well habituated and encounters are typically close and extended. Afternoon: optional Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk — excellent for primates and birds. Overnight Kibale area.
Day 9 — Kibale to Queen Elizabeth via Crater Lakes — 2.5 Hours
Short drive south from Kibale through Fort Portal and the crater lakes district to Queen Elizabeth National Park. Stop at the Ndali-Kasenda crater lakes for photographs — the view across a chain of volcanic crater lakes from the escarpment is one of Uganda’s finest panoramas. Arrive Mweya Peninsula by midday. Afternoon game drive on the Kasenyi Plains. Overnight Mweya.
Day 10 — Full Day Queen Elizabeth National Park
Early morning game drive — Kasenyi Plains for lions, elephants, and Uganda kob. Return to Mweya for the afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise — 3 hours on the water passing enormous hippo pods, Nile crocodiles, and elephants. Day 11 — Queen Elizabeth to Ishasha to Bwindi — 3 to 4 Hours
