The Kampala to Kigali Route

Kampala to Masaka — 2 Hours

The first section of the Kampala to Kigali drive heads southwest from Kampala on the Masaka Road — a well-maintained dual carriageway for the first 40km before becoming a single-lane tarmac highway through the rolling hills of central Uganda. Masaka is the last major town before the Rwanda border and a good fuel and lunch stop. Distance from Kampala to Masaka: approximately 130km.

Fuel: Fill your tank in Masaka. There are reliable fuel stations in Masaka town centre.

Masaka to Mbarara — 1.5 Hours

From Masaka the road continues southwest through increasingly hilly terrain to Mbarara — Uganda’s second largest city and the main commercial hub of western Uganda. Mbarara has good restaurants, ATMs, supermarkets, and fuel stations. This is the last major urban centre before the Rwanda border — stock up on any supplies here.

Food stop: Mbarara has several good roadside restaurants serving Ugandan food. The drive through this section offers beautiful views of the Ankole cattle landscape — the long-horned Ankole cattle grazing on rolling green hills are one of Uganda’s most photogenic roadside sights.

Mbarara to Katuna Border — 1.5 Hours

From Mbarara the road heads south toward Kabale — Uganda’s highest town at 1,869 metres altitude — and then down to the Katuna border post. The road through Kabale is winding and spectacular — the crater lake landscape around Kabale is one of Uganda’s most beautiful regions. The approach to the border descends through tea plantations and terraced hillsides.

Optional stop: Lake Bunyonyi — approximately 15km from Kabale — is one of Uganda’s most beautiful lakes and worth a 30-minute stop for photographs if you have time.

Katuna Border Crossing

The Katuna (Uganda) to Gatuna (Rwanda) border crossing is the most popular crossing point on the Kampala to Kigali route. The crossing typically takes 30 to 60 minutes for most travellers with complete documentation.

What you need at the border:

  • Valid passport
  • Uganda exit stamp
  • Rwanda visa or East Africa Tourist Visa
  • Cross-border vehicle documentation — COMESA insurance and vehicle permit prepared by Uganda Car Rentals

Rwanda immigration and customs are efficient and well-organised. Once through, the road improves noticeably — Rwanda’s roads are exceptionally well-maintained.Gatuna to Kigali — 1.5 Hours

From the border to Kigali is approximately 90km on Rwanda’s smooth, well-signposted tarmac highway. The road passes through Byumba and descends gradually into the Kigali basin. Kigali is visible from the surrounding hills as you approach — a compact, modern city spread across multiple hills. Follow signs for Kigali City Centre for hotels and the airport.

Alternative Route — Via Cyanika Border and Bwindi

Kampala to Kigali via Bwindi and Cyanika

For travellers incorporating Bwindi Impenetrable National Park into their Kampala to Kigali road trip, the alternative route via Kisoro and Cyanika border adds approximately 1 to 2 hours to the total journey but passes through spectacular mountain scenery and allows a night at Bwindi before crossing into Rwanda.

This route is the backbone of the most popular Uganda Rwanda safari itinerary — Kampala → Bwindi → Cyanika border → Volcanoes National Park → Kigali — and is best done over 3 to 4 days rather than as a single day drive.

Road Conditions Kampala to Kigali

Ugandan Side

The Kampala to Katuna section is tarmac throughout and generally in good condition. The road between Masaka and Mbarara has some sections of road works and potholes — drive attentively. The Kabale to Katuna section is narrow and winding but tarmac and manageable in any vehicle.

Rwandan Side

Rwanda’s roads are among the best in East Africa. The Gatuna to Kigali highway is smooth, well-marked, and maintained to a high standard. Speed cameras are active throughout Rwanda — observe the 40km/h urban limits strictly.

Best Vehicle for the Kampala to Kigali Drive

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is the most popular vehicle for the Kampala to Kigali drive — comfortable on long tarmac stretches and capable on the winding mountain roads approaching the border. The RAV4 handles this route well in dry season. A Land Cruiser V8 is recommended if your itinerary includes Bwindi southern sectors.

Practical Tips

Start Early

Depart Kampala no later than 7am to arrive in Kigali by mid-afternoon with time to spare before dark. Driving at night in Uganda is not recommended — start early and give yourself a comfortable buffer.

Fuel Strategy

  • Fill in Kampala before departure
  • Top up in Masaka or Mbarara
  • No need to fill before the border — Rwanda has good fuel stations immediately after Gatuna

Currency

  • Carry Uganda Shillings for the Ugandan side — fuel, food, and any emergency purchases
  • Carry Rwanda Francs or USD for the Rwandan side
  • USD is accepted widely at the border and in Kigali

Plastic Bags

Rwanda has banned plastic bags entirely. Remove all plastic bags from your vehicle before crossing the border — customs officers check vehicles and confiscate plastic bags at the Gatuna crossing.
