Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park and one of the finest safari destinations in East Africa. Located in northwestern Uganda where the Victoria Nile forces itself through a narrow 7-metre gorge to create the most powerful waterfall on earth, Murchison Falls combines breathtaking natural scenery with outstanding wildlife — including large elephant and buffalo herds, lions, leopards, giraffes, hippos, and the spectacular Nile delta boat cruise. Uganda Car Rentals provides 4×4 car hire for self-drive and chauffeured safaris to Murchison Falls National Park from Entebbe Airport and Kampala. Contact us to book your safari vehicle today.
About Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park covers 3,840 square kilometres of northern Uganda, straddling the Victoria Nile as it flows northwest from Lake Victoria toward Lake Albert. The park is Uganda’s oldest and largest protected area, established as a game reserve in 1926. It supports over 76 mammal species including the endangered Rothschild giraffe, large populations of elephant and hippo, healthy lion and leopard numbers, and over 450 bird species along the Nile corridor.
Murchison Falls — The Waterfall
The falls themselves are the defining feature of the park. The entire flow of the Victoria Nile — one of Africa’s greatest rivers — is forced through a rock cleft just 7 metres wide before plummeting 43 metres in a thunderous cascade of white water and spray. The top of the falls can be reached by a short walk from the road above, while the base is best viewed from a Nile boat cruise approaching from below.
Nile Boat Cruise
The Nile boat cruise from Paraa is the most popular activity in Murchison Falls and one of the greatest wildlife experiences in Uganda. The 3-hour cruise upstream to the base of the falls passes through one of Africa’s highest concentrations of hippos and Nile crocodiles, with elephants and buffalo regularly seen drinking on the banks. The final approach to the base of the falls — with spray soaking the boat — is unforgettable.
Game Drives in Murchison Falls
The northern bank of the park offers the best game drive circuits — open savannah grassland with excellent visibility for lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, Uganda kob, and oribi. The Buligi circuit and Albert Delta area are the most productive game drive routes. Early morning game drives beginning at 6:30am offer the best predator sightings.
Driving to Murchison Falls National Park
Driving Time from Entebbe
Murchison Falls National Park is approximately 4 to 5 hours from Entebbe Airport via Kampala and the northern highway through Masindi. The road to the park gate is tarmac and well-maintained, making Murchison one of the most accessible major parks in Uganda. The road is suitable for a Prado or RAV4 in dry season and during moderate rain.
Best Vehicle for Murchison Falls
The Land Cruiser Prado is the top recommendation for Murchison Falls — ideal for the long northern highway drive and comfortable on the park game drive tracks. For larger groups or travellers wanting maximum comfort on the long drive, the Land Cruiser V8 is the premium option. Browse our full 4×4 fleet.
Self-Drive Murchison Falls National Park
Self-drive Murchison Falls is very manageable for independent travellers. The park road network is well-signposted, the main circuits are accessible in a Prado or RAV4, and the Paraa area has a public campsite well-suited to rooftop tent vehicles. The Nile ferry crossing at Paraa operates throughout the day connecting the north and south banks.
Murchison Falls National Park Wildlife
The Big Five at Murchison Falls
Murchison Falls is one of the best parks in Uganda for big game. Lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard are all present in healthy numbers. The park also hosts the endangered Rothschild giraffe — one of only a handful of places in the world where this subspecies can be seen in the wild. Hippo and Nile crocodile are most easily observed on the boat cruise.
Birding at Murchison Falls
With over 450 recorded bird species, Murchison Falls is a world-class birding destination. The Nile banks, Albert Delta, and Budongo Forest on the park’s southern boundary are the richest birding areas. The rare shoebill stork — one of Africa’s most sought-after birds — can be seen in the Albert Delta wetlands with a specialist boat trip.
Budongo Forest — Chimpanzee Trekking
Budongo Forest Reserve on the southern boundary of Murchison Falls National Park offers chimpanzee trekking at the Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro sites. This makes Murchison Falls an excellent standalone destination for travellers wanting both savannah game drives and primate trekking on a single park visit.
Combining Murchison Falls with Other Destinations
Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley
A combined Murchison Falls and Kidepo Valley itinerary covers Uganda’s two most spectacular savannah parks in a single northern circuit. Kidepo is approximately 5 hours northeast of Murchison via Gulu. Minimum 6 days recommended for both parks.
Murchison Falls and Kibale Forest
Murchison Falls combined with Kibale Forest chimpanzee trekking is a popular 5 to 6 day itinerary covering the north and west of Uganda. The drive between the two parks is approximately 4 hours via Fort Portal.
Murchison Falls from Entebbe — One-Way to Kigali
For travellers on a one-way itinerary from Entebbe to Kigali, Murchison Falls can be the northern starting point before driving south through Queen Elizabeth and crossing into Rwanda.
