About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers 331 square kilometres of dense montane and lowland forest in southwestern Uganda, sitting on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 in recognition of its extraordinary biodiversity — it is home to over 120 mammal species, more than 350 bird species, and approximately 460 mountain gorillas representing nearly half of the global population.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking at Bwindi
Gorilla trekking is the centrepiece of every Bwindi visit. Trekking groups of up to 8 visitors are assigned to a specific habituated gorilla family and guided by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers through the forest until the family is located. Treks can last between 2 and 8 hours depending on the gorillas’ location on that day. Once found, visitors spend one full hour with the gorilla family — an experience widely described as the most powerful wildlife encounter on earth.
Gorilla Trekking Permits
Gorilla trekking permits at Bwindi cost $800 USD per person and must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, especially for peak season visits between June and September and December to February. Gorilla Habituation Experience
In addition to standard gorilla trekking, Bwindi offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience — a full day spent with a gorilla family that is still being habituated to human presence. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — Trekking Sectors
Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors, each accessed from different entry points. Knowing which sector your permit is assigned to helps you plan your driving route and accommodation correctly.
Buhoma Sector
Buhoma is the most established and most visited sector, located in the north of the park and the easiest to access from Kampala. It is approximately 8 to 9 hours from Kampala and 6 to 7 hours from Entebbe Airport. The road into Buhoma is manageable in a Land Cruiser Prado or V8 in dry conditions.
Ruhija Sector
Ruhija is the highest sector of Bwindi at over 2,300 metres altitude, offering a cooler and more remote trekking experience. Access from Kabale town takes approximately 1.5 hours on steep, narrow roads — a high-clearance 4×4 is essential.
Rushaga and Nkuringo Sectors
Rushaga and Nkuringo are located in the south of Bwindi, closest to the Rwanda border at Kisoro. These sectors are popular with travellers combining Bwindi with cross-border gorilla trekking in Rwanda. The roads in this area are steep and rocky — a Land Cruiser V8 is strongly recommended.
Driving to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The road to Bwindi requires a genuine high-clearance 4×4. The final approach roads into all four sectors involve steep gradients, deep murram tracks, and river crossings that are impassable in a 2WD vehicle especially during the rainy seasons of March to May and October to November.
Driving Time from Entebbe to Bwindi
From Entebbe Airport to Bwindi Buhoma is approximately 6 to 7 hours via Mbarara. Most travellers depart by 7am to arrive with daylight remaining. We strongly recommend the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 or Prado for this route — browse our full 4×4 fleet.
Recommended Vehicle for Bwindi
The Toyota Land Cruiser V8 is the top recommendation for the Bwindi route — particularly for Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors which have the most demanding approach roads. The Land Cruiser Prado is suitable for Buhoma and Ruhija sectors in dry conditions.

The Batwa are the original forest-dwelling people of Bwindi, now living in communities around the park boundary.
